About the program
What is it
In order to cultivate a strong culture of ICT at the primary schools in Chanyanya, MCZ carries out this project by employing four strategies that include: Equipping schools with ICT materials, Training teachers, Establishing ICT clubs, and hosting a Computer Resource Center.
Project Targets
Why Computer Literacy in Schools?
In March 2007, the Zambian government recognized the importance of adequate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and launched a policy focused on creating an environment that promotes access and use of technology across all sectors of Zambia’s education system. This is in line with the Ministry of General Education’s goal of utilizing ICT to improve young people’s quality of life. When it comes to advancing this policy, rural schools in Zambia are at a more significant disadvantage than those in urban areas. Most rural schools, such as those in Chanyanya, lack the equipment and qualified staff to provide effective ICT education. Electricity and Internet connectivity are not available within the schools. Teachers lack the skillset and proper training to conduct and teach classes for this subject, making it impossible to match with the standard of education provided in urban schools, thereby putting the students at a disadvantage when it comes to accessing quality jobs in the future. The Ministry of General Education states that being skilled in this area leads to better higher education and, eventually, quality jobs (Zambia Country Report, 2007).
